Whenever you encounter a problem with your appliance, consult your manual first. You will often find information in it that can resolve the problem.

Why does my washer/dishwasher smell like mildew?
Many times a build-up of soap residue is the culprit here. Most manufacturers recommend using far less soap in modern washers and dishwashers due to their increased efficiency and low water usage. Check your Use & Care Guide for recommended amounts. If you already have soap residue built up in your appliance, you can run a cycle with a half-cup of white vinegar (but no clothes/dishes) to break down the residue. Several cycles may be necessary depending on the amount of residue.

My dryer is heating, but it takes too long to dry the clothes.
In most cases, this problem is due to an air-flow restriction, usually in the venting that connects your dryer to the wall duct, or in the wall duct itself. Regular cleaning is recommended. If your venting and ducting is clean, you may have an issue with the washing machine not spinning enough water out of the clothes during the wash cycle.

My new dryer tumbles, but doesn't heat.
This problem is almost always due to one half of the circuit being turned off. Check your breaker box and turn the dryer circuit off and then on.

My refrigerator is brand new, and the lights come on but the motor doesn't run and it won't cool.
Many refrigerators, especially higher end models, come equipped with a demo mode for use on showroom floors. Some models even have a power switch. Consult your manual for instruction on how to switch your model to "regular mode."

My brand new washer is shaking during the spin cycle.
The first thing to check here is whether the shipping brackets have been removed. On most models, they are located in the back of the washer, though some models have plastic straps or even styrofoam blocks that secure the drum during shipping. Consult your manual for instruction on how to remove the brackets. Also, you can check to make sure you're your washer is level and stable. Some floors have enough slope in them that the leveling legs cannot adjust far enough to completely level the machine. In these cases, one or more legs may need to be shimmed.

I'm getting an error code on my appliance, but nothing seems to be wrong.
Sometimes this simply requires a reset of the control board. To do this, shut down the power to the unit by either unplugging it or shutting off the appropriate breaker. Leave it off for 15 minutes, and then restore the power. If the error persists, you probably need to have a technician look at it.

I've lost my manual, or my manual was missing from the box.
Almost all manufacturers have manuals available on their websites, which you can download or print. Have your model number handy when looking for a manual.

My new refrigerator isn't very cold...
Refrigerators can take up to 24 hours to get down to the proper temperature. If you have little or no food in it, it will not feel very cold. To test whether your refrigerator is cooling properly, put some food or beverages in it and see if they cool down. The ideal load for cooling is about two-thirds full.

SMTP Authentication is required when sending email out via most major ISP mail servers and most corporate mail servers. It is simply a username/password system which permits authenticated e-mail senders, just like most other computer accounts require authentication.
If you do not have SMTP Authentication turned on in your email software (Outlook, Entourage, Eudora, Apple Mail, etc.) you run the risk that the mail server will not recognize that you are a legitimate customer.
If the mail server is using spam filters (such as Spamhaus' PBL or XBL) it may refuse to take your email, because it thinks you are a stranger and your dynamic IP address is probably on Spamhaus' PBL list of dynamic IP addresses which mail servers should not accept mail from unless the sender is authorized to use that mail server.
To fix this, you need to turn on "SMTP Authentication", here's how:
In Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express:
Start Outlook or Outlook Express.
From the menu, select Tools, then Accounts.
Click once on the appropriate account from the Mail tab.
Select Properties.
From the account properties dialog box, choose the Servers tab.
Put a check in the box for "My server requires authentication".
Click on the "Settings" button.
In the 'Outgoing Mail Server' dialog box, make sure "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected.
Press "OK".
Back at the "Properties", click "Apply", then "OK".
Click "OK" to close out of all dialog boxes.
In Eudora:
Open Eudora, pull down the Tools menu and select "Options..." to display the Options window.
Select the "Getting Started" category on the left-hand side.
Select the "Allow authentication" checkbox and click "OK".
In Apple Mail:
Open Apple Mail.
Click on the "Mail" menu in the top menubar.
Click on Preferences, Click on Accounts.
Click on the account that you want to modify.
Click on Account Information.
Click on the "Server Settings..." button.
In the pulldown list next to "Authentication:", select "Password".
Enter your username and email password (the same ones you use to retreive your POP or IMAP email).
Click on OK.
Close the Preferences window by clicking on the X in the upper left hand corner of the window.
In Agent:
Tools >> Servers and Accounts >> Outbound Email Server
Connection: TLS if available
Login Method: Username and password
Advanced Settings: Port: 587
